Websites like RVRentalConnection.com and PrivateMotorhomeRental.com are sites that require you, as the owner, to pay a membership fee. Private Motorhome Rental provides RV’s throughout the United States, while RV Rental Connection has RV’s available in the US, Canada and Germany. The memberships for both vary in price per month. For RV Rental Connection, there is a membership price of $15/mo for just one RV listing, plus commission rates, or up to $300/mo for multiple listings. With Private Motorhome Rental, your commission rate is based on the level of involvement with you as the owner. If you want PMR to handle most of your business and provide more traffic to your listing, it could cost you up to 30% in commission rates. If you want to handle most of it on your own, it can be as low as no commission, but with a monthly fee of around $300. This may be something that you look into if you have multiple RV’s. Some RV owners choose to rent not just their own RV, but purchase additional RV’s to list for more of a substantial income.

When You Want to Go it Alone

For people who want to handle all of the business of renting themselves, they may choose to use places like Craigslist, Facebook or the Classifieds in their local newspaper. The bright side of using these types of avenues is that all of the money made by you, the owner, comes straight back to you. There is no service fee or commission. There are a few down-sides, though. First, if you are taking out space in the newspaper, you could be paying up to $50 a week for an advertisement with as little as 25-50 words. That gets pricey over the course of a camping season. Secondly, while websites like Craigslist and Facebook are popular, they don’t necessarily gain as much traffic as websites that are designed solely for the purpose of renting your RV. Lastly, you are going to have the issue of exchanging money directly with your renter or needing to set up something separate from your listing in order to get paid. This seems a bit tedious when you look at how streamlined some of the other website options are. So, it seems that if you want to get serious about creating a substantial income from your camper, advertising on an actual RV rental website is a much better route.

Maybe after looking at all of the options, you’re thinking, “This sounds like a great idea for connecting with other campers and generating some extra income, but is it too good to be true?” RV owners who have started peer to peer renting say the most difficult parts tend to be the upkeep of the RV as it comes in and goes back out again and the giving up the control of not being the one driving and operating your rig. After all, these vehicles are expensive and have become your home away from home. To hand them over to someone else can be a little disconcerting. It is extra work and can be extra stress at times –especially if you tend to be a worrier. Still, most all agree that if you can get beyond the giving up of control, the benefits far outweigh the downsides. Most have had great experiences renting out their RV’s and enjoy connecting with other travelers in the way that peer to peer renting makes possible. It’s a building of community. And when you can connect over traveling and vacationing, who doesn’t want to be a part of that?
